People usually get headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. Cluster headaches don't happen as frequently, but men are five times more likely to have them than women are.

Headache locations and causes

In the back of the head or neck: The cause may be tension headaches or migraines, other causes are arthritis of the upper spine or occipital neuralgia.
Top of the head or around the top of the head: It may be a tension headache, other causes are migraines or occipital neuralgia, severe high blood pressure (which is rare), aneurysm or bleeding, called hemorrhagic stroke (which is also rare) .
Headaches in the forehead, cheeks, or behind both eyes: The most common cause is tension headaches or migraines, and other causes are cluster headaches or sinus infections.
Headache behind only one eye: may be due to cluster headache, migraine, occipital neuralgia, ocular inflammation or aneurysm (which is rare).
Headaches on both sides of the temples: may be due to tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, temporal arteritis (more common in the elderly), or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
Headaches behind the ear: The cause may be an ear infection (more common in children), occipital neuralgia, sinus infections, a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, or dental problems.
Headache on one side of your head: This may be due to migraines, cluster headaches, or persistent migraines (which are rare).

If you're not sure exactly where the headache is, or if the headache is all over your head: Tension headaches, migraines, or sinus infections could be the cause.
