Swelling of the feet or ankles is a visible swelling of the eyes that results from several factors and causes. It is often accompanied by pain, changes in skin color, and high temperature in the affected area. Symptoms of swelling of the feet or ankles vary according to the cause of the condition.

1. General symptoms of swelling of the feet or ankles:

*The skin appears white when pressed.
*Increase the elasticity of the affected area.
*the pain.
* The temperature of the affected area increases, and this may extend to all parts of the body.
*Increasing the size of the affected area, which leads to a smaller size of the shoe used.

2. Symptoms of swollen feet or ankles according to the cause:

*Gout: Symptoms include swollen feet, swelling of the big toe accompanied by redness, heat and pain, arthritis, swelling and joint pain.
*Pregnancy: Sudden swelling appears in the feet and ankles during pregnancy, usually after the 20th week of pregnancy, and may be the first symptom of preeclampsia.
*Ankle injury or inflammation: Swelling often occurs in only one of the ankles.

Causes of swollen feet or ankles:

*Edema: is water retention in the ankle or foot area, and often results from standing for long periods or walking.
*Pregnancy: It is a normal swelling that most pregnant women suffer from.
* Taking some types of medications: The most prominent of these medications are: anti-inflammatory medications, hormone replacement medications, medications to treat diabetes, and antidepressants.
*Injury: Any trauma to the foot or ankle causes swelling, especially a fracture.
* Some diseases: including heart disease, liver disease, and kidney disease, all of which cause changes in the water balance in the body, leading to swelling of the feet or ankles.

*Treatment of swollen feet or ankles:

There is no single method for treatment. The main cause of the condition must be known and then treated. In the following, some examples will be mentioned to make it easier to understand what is meant:

*Treatment of swollen feet or ankles resulting from gout: Take medications to treat gout and follow a specific diet to reduce the symptoms of the disease.
*Treatment of swelling of the feet or ankles resulting from pregnancy: There may be no treatment unless the swelling is caused by preeclampsia. Treatment is by taking some medications or performing a delivery procedure if the fetus is fully developed.
*Treatment of swollen feet or ankles resulting from injury: The injury is treated by repairing the fracture, or treating inflammation.
*Lymphoma: It is a swelling resulting from blockage of the lymphatic vessels, which causes the retention of lymphatic fluid in a specific area.

Ways to prevent swelling of the feet or ankles:

*Exercise can improve blood flow and fluid distribution in the body.
*Follow a healthy diet, in which you should avoid excessive use of salt, as it leads to fluid retention and swelling.
*Move as much as possible, and when lying down, the feet should be raised above the level of the heart.
*Getting rid of excess weight leads to relieving pressure on joints and muscles.
*Abstain from alcohol, cigarettes and other substances that can lead to swelling.
