Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology

My hospital affilication currently is with Klinikum Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, where I am Chairman of the the Department Head position of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Endocrinology and Nephrology, which also includes General Internal Medicine, the large Hemodialysis Unit and the Central Endoscopic Facility. At the same time, I was also appointed Head of the Emergency Medicine Department at Klinikum Klagenfurt. I have been Secretary General of EASL, the European Association for the Study of the Liver for the period 2013 - 2015. Before that I served as Vice-secretary of EASL from 2011 to 2013. I also have been Secretary General of the Austrian Association for Internal Medicine from 2007 - 2015. Previously, I have been acting as Associate Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chairman at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. I am a fellow of the Austrian College of Physicians (Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology / Hepatology, Infectious Diseases, and Intensive Care Medicine). At Medical University of Vienna, I have been leading the portal hypertension, the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and the HIV-HCV Coinfection Study Group at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. My group there has been and still is conducting a number a clinical trials in these areas, for all of which I have been and in some instances still are principal investigator in Austria. In addition, we have been running a translational lab testing novel approaches to the treatment of HCC and portal hypertension
